Fight Of The Century?

Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (left) and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez squared off September 16th, 2017 in the T-Mobile Arena.

After what he felt was a "disappointing" and "disrespectful" showing of boxing in the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight, Oscar De La Hoya named the Alvarez vs. Golovkin fight the "Fight of the Century."  Although it did not live up to the hype in some people's eyes, it is expected to do well in the Pay-Per-View buys and exceeded live gate number projections. After being shown in over 30 countries, the fight put both fighters on the map and gave them the ability to showcase their skills on an international level. The interesting thing about this fight is that one fighter does not speak a lick of English and the other speaks broken English.

So how did this fight do so well in the American market?

Oscar De La Hoya on the day of the fight.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya did a great job pitting this fight against the Mayweather vs McGregor fight. His tweet lashing out against Mayweather and Mcgregor got him 16, 000 retweets, 25, 000 likes and numerous appearances on major radio talk shows like The Breakfast Club.

His presence on social media and uncanny ability to appeal to both the younger and older generations based on his stature helped garner a significant amount of interest.  He promoted (and truly believed) that this will be a classic boxing match and ultimately be the fight of the century.   Being a huge boxing fan, I was already convinced.  Alvarez has only lost one fight in his career, and Golovkin is undefeated.  It definitely had a recipe for success.  That is still not the reason why the fight did so well.  It came down to promotion.  I asked some of my nephew's high school friends about the fight, and although they never heard of either fighter, they said they were splitting the pay-per-view fight strictly due to Oscar De La Hoya's words.  Oscar De La Hoya simply sold this fight by appealing to one of the younger generation's major issues: fear of missing out.

Did you see the fight? If so, was the fight the "Fight of the Century" to you?
